This week I finished the basic ground work for Dallas Divide. Took down the temporary backdrop and finished forming the XPS Foam. Since I’m building this layout modular with the intention of moving it into the train-room (once built), I wanted it lite. I picked up some 3", 2" and 1" thick XPS foam from the local hardware store, and some 1/2" thick from a craft store. Using a combination of hot foam knife and a rasp, formed the basic hills.
Since this section of Dallas Divide is rolling scrubland (great for sheep herding) I did not need to have any rock faces. With the goal of being lite I decided to give Woodland Scenics “Mold-A-Scene” a try. So far I like how it works and looks.
After applying the plaster, I applied several washes of Yellow Orchid and Burnt Umber to get the color I was looking for. I using photos I took in 2023 at Dallas Divide to match the color. I which I collected some of the dirt while I was there. Will need to find some good substitutes.
After the wash dried, I put up my early fall backdrop and replaced the structures.
Next up will be laying the track and then the long process of ground cover of rocks, dirts, scrub bushes, grass and trees.
I do appreciate that I’m working on this module in the garage. I have a sink handing and a floor that is easy to clean. working with scenery material is a messy job. My only challenge is my dog just wants me to play fetch with him.
Love to hear what you think!
