Dallas Divide Barn 1

Apr 9 2025

Been far too long since I did an update. Life has a way of changing best laid plans. Had a bit of family emergency and then some health challenges. Now have time for working on trains. :) This will be the first of a few quick posts over the next few days.

During the holiday I did build the barn, but did not post it.

After looking at all the pictures I could find of the barns at Dallas Divide and along the RGS, the following 2 images captures what I wanted.

To me it looks like the barn has part of the roof missing and some of the siding. Since I’m modeling the late 40’s or early 50’s, I figured this barn would be not in best of shape. And the thought of building it with the inside exposed would be interesting to look at and a challenge.

The build process was pretty basic after I had the plans drawn up. I cut all the strip wood as needed, added grain and damaged to a good number of the strip wood. Used a couple of stains, with a staining fixture. Leveraged design from some friends, just a PVC pipe cut in half with 3d printed caps. The stain is a mixture of Hunterline stains and India Ink diluted with alcohol.

Next step was glueing up the walls using the template.

Adding the floors and roof framing.

Next up was the roof and sides. The roof looks like corrugated metal. I’m not a fan of aluminum roofs. I find it’s hard to paint and weather. There are a few products on the market that are nice but not exactly what I was looking for. I spent some time and found some inkjet paper that has an aluminum sheen to it. Holds paint, stains and weathering chalks like a charm.

My other hobby is 3d printing, so making a jig to make the corrugations was another fun side project. I added a slow gear motor to it to make the process quicker.

Barn is now finished and I’m happy with the results.

Next up is terraforming and laying track in Dallas divide. I’m actually done with the terraforming, I’ll post that soon.

Enjoy!
